What is "Dichroic Glass"?
Dichroic means two colors, and this glass appears to be different
colors when viewed from different angles or in varying degrees
of illumination. Dichroic glass is created by adding a thin layer
of metallic oxides which transmit certain light wavelengths while
reflecting others, causing an iridescent effect.Because of the
complexity involved in making it, dichroic glass is quite costly,
around $100- $200 per square foot. It was originally created for
satellite mirrors and instruments, but it now has many high-tech
applications in fiber optics, infrared lasers, motion picture
equipment and even sun glasses.
Dichroic coatings transmit certain specific wavelengths of light,
while reflecting others, thus creating an interference-effect
akin to to the iridescence observed in soap bubbles, dragonfly
wings, hummingbird feathers, and fire opals.
